Nazaré

Nazaré beach, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has some of Portugal's oldest fishing traditions.

This is the beach in Portugal where fishing traditions are the most colorful and it's not uncommon to come across fishmongers still wearing their seven skirts, as tradition dictates. On a late Saturday afternoon in the summer months, it's essential to sit on the wall and watch the interesting spectacle of “Arte Xávega”, where the nets laden with fish arrive from the sea and the women shout out their sales pitches. If we don't understand the words exactly, it's nothing to worry about. They are codes that often only they know.

From Sítio and with time for a walk through Pedralva Park, you'll reach Pederneira, a natural viewpoint with an unmissable view of the Nazaré coastline. 

Nowadays, the great attraction of this town is the waves and surfing, thanks to the “Canhão da Nazaré”, an underwater geomorphological phenomenon that allows giant, perfect waves to form. It's the largest submerged canyon in Europe, stretching 170 kilometers along the coast and up to 5000 meters deep.
